made their appearance at several places as heretofore reported and have greatly alarmed the Freedmen of the rural districts. This more particularly in Appomattox Co. I would recommend that the Government arms collected of the Freedmen of that county be again returned to them to enable them to defend their homes and household from the attacks of armed and disguised men. The civil authorities of said County are not wholely above suspicion of having joined with the K.K.K. in their late demonstrations that is some of them.

The Schools of this Division are getting along well.

The temperance cause does not meet with much encouragement yet, that is in the way of an organized movement. Intemperance to no very alarming extent prevails amongst the Freedmen
