speaker but a few days since told the colored people that he hoped they would fill the public offices of the State, as now the white Virginians were deprived of them, and the offices did not belong to Carpet-bag Yankees: this language does not have any effect upon the minds of the colored people for they are all opposed to placing colored men into such positions in advance of the white Republicans,

We are in great need of schools in this Division for the colored people, they cannot get teachers for the two or three school-houses that they have, and they cannot raise money to build school houses where they are needed. It is very necessary that the Bureau should assist or appropriate means to build at least two school houses in this Division; the colored people of this section feel very much slighted as none of the different aid societies or the Bureau have expended one dollar towards building school houses but have in other portions of the State.
