miles for it.  There was sufficient corn raised last year to have supported all but much of it has been distilled into Whiskey - consequently the suffering.

In relation to the formation of Temperance Societies, nothing has been done, although the Colored People drink far less then heretofore, and while I am of the opinion that great good maybe done in the way of checking the free use of Liquor, I dont think anything tending even toward teetotalism can ever succeed in these Counties.

In relation to the general condition of the Freed People, I am happy to be able to state, it to be quite good:  They are fast learning the form and routine of Civil Law - and with a fair show, will in the course of a short time compare favorable, with those of the whites, who have had even a better chance.
