Every effort possible is being made by what is termed the conservative party to defeat the measures proposed by Congress, for their admission into the Union, and as the Freed-men are obliged to depend upon them for the means of support, it is expected that in many cases, they will be influenced by them; Although the mass of the colored people seem to stand firm to the principles of the Republican party.
Very generally they are busily employed in their Spring work, although but in few instances have they been able to obtain contracts for labor, for a longer period than two months. The Schools have been somewhat diminished in their attendance, owing to the close of the night school for the present term, and the necessity of many of the pupils hiring themselves for the spring and summer months. The temperance organizations continue to prosper, and constantly we have additions to the number of those who sign the pledge and keep it, Two new divisions will be formed the coming month
