are cared for by the proper civil officers and I have not seen or heard of any vagrants in the sub. division.

I have observed no drunkenness among the freedmen this month, but can not report any material decrease in the use of ardent spirits; a habit very generally prevailing.

I am unable to report any perceptible abatement in the feeling of distrust existing between the freedmen and the white people, engendered among the former by the unscrupulous conduct of many of the latter in their dealings with them.

Two schools are reported in operation this month, one at Wellville and the other at Burkeville: the former is in a very flourishing condition, having one hundred and sixty five scholars: the latter, owing to the fact that a fee for tuition is exacted, reports but fifteen scholars. 

I have information of several private schools for colored people in operation in the lessor part of the County and will endeavour to have them reported.

The evening sessions of the schools have been discontinued for the season.
