General

I have the honor to make the following report of Bureau affairs in 8th Sub. District for the month ending May 31st 1868. 

The Freedmen generally are engaged either in working land upon shares or for monthly wages. The demand for labor fully equals the supply though the wages paid are not remunerative. The nominal price paid for labor is ten dollars per month. This is usually paid in necessaries at prices as high or higher than paid in those localities where labor commands nearly three times the price paid here. Employers seldom pay money. Provision, House rent and orders for goods at the Stores are the usual way of paying. Many of the Freedmen are acquiring a
