With a voting population of 300 @ 400 in this Mag'l District they are without a religious society, and but for the energy of the two young ladies from the North now teaching here, they would be without a day school or a Sunday school. Notwithstanding theappropriation of $1000. for the erection of a new school house, I have found great difficulty in raising $50. with which to purchase the lot for the building, and expect still greater in procuring the necessary funds to finish the foundation &c they seeming to think that the Gov't will furnish everything. While the parents are very lukewarm, the young ladies teaching here have succeeded in infusing the children with
a desire for knowledge, and notwithstanding the opposition of the whites and the indifference of the older freedmen, the school here has been a great success, and the examination at News Ferry on the 25th. and at the C.H. on the 26th showed on the part
of teachers and scholars a faithful performance of duty, and a proficiency that is astonishing considering all the circumstances, and I would most earnestly suggest to those in authority that the same teachers be sent here next year.
Very Resp'y
