Some Freedmen attempted lately to speak at Colliarstown some ten miles from this place but were surrounded and chased by white men: Two of whom were recognized as Col. O. Ferrell & W.W. Scott both of Lexington who probably went to this place with bad intentions; Upon investigation I discover that no overt act was made to break up the meeting but so many men were seen hiding in the bushes and riding on the roads after dark that the Freedmen abandoned their Hack and took to the woods for safety. It is one of those cases where it would be impossible to prove much against the aggressors and yet each Freedman & some white Union men declare that they are convinced and know that they (the Freedmen) would have been fired upon if they had attempted to speak.
