are in my opinion sufficient to remove him at once and I would respectfully invite your attention to them they being on file at the Headquarters of the 1st Military District Va.
   
When returning from speaking at the Court House a few nights since, I was abused and threatened with an attack by about six or seven young men but upon presenting my pistols and threating to blow their brains out of any man who touched me I was finally allowed to proceed home after having had the satisfaction of telling them that I was not to be mobbed and not to be bullied and that I should always be prepared as I now was for any such characters. It was afterwards ascertained that three of these young men were armed and had bragged that they would shoot me.
   
The Freedmen are progressing well and working well.  The great trouble is that they do not make their contracts properly. I have advised them in this subject at several meetings and the next year there will be less trouble should the Bureau Officer attend to this matter faithfully.
   
The Military Commr Lt. Wagner has been removed and Lt Mahan 29th US Infantry is in his place. Lexington is at present quiet very few students having returned.
