by the civil authorities muster all this ignorance and depravity a good heart can be discovered which by proper direction and cultivation will make them a good and useful class of citizens.

The feeling of the Whites towards the Blacks except as servants is very bitter and hostile The exercise of free will, thought and opinion when not in accordance with theirs is not allowed if possible to prevent it. They look upon all who claim "equal rights" for freedmen as enemies and treat them with all manner of abuse and insults. A man differing with them in politics they esteem a personal enemy and with whom they will have no intercourse. Schools for freedmen in their estimation are not only useless but a positive injury in the community and all engaged in them are unworthy of respect or notice
