These threats are often put into execution to the great inconvenience and suffering of the freedmen, especially when there is but a small demand for labor as at the commensement of this month.

The freedmen frequently meet these acts of hostility to their race, by an evasive policy, often making the old masters believe that they have a greater interest for his temporal welfare than they have for their own, and that they have more respect for his oppressive tiranical political principles than for the liberty breathing sentiments of their own political platform.  To these the whites act & speak kindly, but every act on their part must be characterized by the most absolute docility and submission.
