There is very little said now about politics. I have heard scarcely anything said upon the subject by the colored. The whites who are leaders often enquire of me what the prospects are at the north. There is no doubt but what the whites are well organized and without any known secret societies, yet they possibly may have such.

The colored in this Division mostly belong to a secret society called the "Lone Star". There are no whites belonging to it that I have heard of. They have nothing to do with the "Union League", not admitting them into their society so I am informed. Mr Norton,(colored) is the leader of this "Lone Star".

There has been started a temperance society at Yorktown which I think will do some good, but it is hard work to get members to it. Being brought up all their lives among drinking society, they consider it just as necessary to have their drachm, as it is to have bread

I am General,
With great respect,
your obedient, Servant,
