if he returned; this was justified on the ground if violation of contract on the part of the Complt. and the right of Thompson to keep him off his premises. In this the magistrate concurred and Thompson was released Thompson complained of the freedmen Scott Wilson for assault and battery for which the justice held him to appear to answer an indictment at the next term of the Grand Jury. For want of bail he was committed. 
IV. Sandy Stokes (col) vs. Harrison Winn for driving from his plantation and labor and threatening his life if he returned. Stokes was laboring under a contract with another freedmen named Wm Stokes for a share of the crops. The magistrate EC Scott Esq was requested to hear the complaint and hold the said Winn to keep the peace according to law. The driving off and threatening were admitted but justified on the ground that the contract was with Wm Stokes and that he was to employ none who were objectionable to the said Winn and also on the ground that Winn had a right to drive him from his premises and threaten him if he did not comply. In this the magistrate concurred and released Winn. Sandy Stokes was advised to  look to Wm Stokes for his pay and damages. 
After complaint have been made such as disagreement in settling accounts, quarreling in families &c which are usually settled without recourse to the magistrate.
There are no schools in the county. There is a school house at Meherrins Depot and one
