In compliance with Circular No 6 Series 1866 I have the honor to report that the state of feeling between the Whites & Freedmen is perhaps worse than before reported owing to the present political state of the country. The Freedmen generally attend to their own affairs and do not discuss the political questions of the day when they can avoid it. They are working well and prospering in spite of bad season Those that worked for a share of the crops have not done as well as those that [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] worked by the month. I find it hard to keep up the interest among them in regard to their own and their childrens education. They seem to take an interest as long as a teacher is provided by others but do not do much themselves towards the teachers support There is a class that will give a dollar towards a tournament or dance but will not give a cent for educational purposes. This does not apply to all for there are quite a number that have given liberaly. One great draw back to their advancement is the manner by which
