in October: The people are very slow in their action in the cause of education, and exhibit but little energy, many do not realize the importance of it, some who do are too negligent to enforce the attendance of their children, and but few of them will subscribe even the smallest sums for the support of either teachers or schools; They will send their children, provided the public, or some private benevolent association will pay all expenses attending the same; but, instead of looking upon the school as a source of benefit to them, seem to imagine they are conferring a great favor on the teachers by allowing their children to be taught by them.

Employment for all able to work is yet plenty, and there is no reason for any being idle, there are however many who will not work steadily for any length of time, being unused to having any considerable amount of money, as soon as they receive a couple of months wages they are dissatisfied until they have an opportunity to visit all
