their lands should be cultivated, they will be compelled, to give the only available labor in their reach, the work necessary to raise crops for the support of themselves & their families.

Most of the Freedmen made their contracts for this year without consulting the Bureau Officer on duty here. and I am afraid they will have some trouble when the crops come to be divided, very few of the contracts being in accordance with the law.

Very little intemperance exists among the Freedmen in this Division. although no temperance societies have as yet been organized.
