upon which to erect school houses, and where lumber could not be purchased for that purpose it can now be had at reasonable rates, & I doubt not, if other contracts had not been made already, many who have been ordered off land would be allowed to remain. This change was noticable about the midle of the month, which led me to suspect that it was caused by the news of the recent elections in Pencilvania this yr. But you will judge for yourself whether or not an election so far off could produce such an effect here. It may be proper for me to remain here however, that, if the elections in those states produce such a change, and if the same principles shall triumph in the national elections as triumphed in that election, the rights of the colored people will be very well secured by the time I make my next report.
