generation of the blacks will show such a marked improvement over the present as will not only astonish their enemies but render glad the hearts of those who have believed in, hoped and labored for, their advancement.

A very encouraging state of things is to be found in the fact that a great many Colored men are becoming owners of land and are endeavoring to obtain that independence which becomes freemen. I direct them to such with all the means in my power, as I consider it one of their surest safegards. By such a course the good will separate into a class from the bad, a spirit of emulation will arise among them which is at present greatly needed.
