there is but little extreme destitution found among them. But one case of suffering from want has been found during the month. A Girl named Jane about 11 years old was found begging in the street without food almost naked and suffering from a severe burn caused by falling into the fire some month ago. She has been living with here former Mistres (named Pemberton) since the war, who treated her very inhumanely and last week turned her out of her house to beg her living in almost a naked condition. She was cared for, the Overseer of the Poor notified and requested to make provision for her.

The Freedpeople are industrious, quiet, peaceable and well disposed except when influenced by drink and bad men. Many complaints are made by Freedmen of their employers refusing to pay them their just dues and of driving them from their premises and crops while working for a share thereof. Some of these complaints are satisfactorily settled while others are referred to the civil authorities with but little prospect of justice being done in the case. Employers
