The freedmen are generally temperate, and I have yet to hear of the first row or collision among them arising from the use of intoxicating liquor. Now and then a fight occurs between a colored man and a white one, but in nine cases out of ten the white man is intoxicated, and is the aggressor. Serious crimes among the freedmen are rare, and but few cases for petty crimes ever get before the courts. During the last nine months not one complaint has been made against a freedmen for drunkeness, or riotous or disorderly behavior in this County or in Fluvanna.
