and infirmity have little to promote their comfort

With increasing cold weather there are found to be, no adequate provisions for the comfort of the prisoners now confined in the County Jail,.

Upon the complaint of several, I, in company with the Sheriff, went through the building on the 24th inst, for the purpose of ascertaining its exact condition. The chimnies are imperfect, and fill the cells constantly with smoke whenever there is a fire. Only about half of the requisite quantity of wood had been furnished during the month. The grates were all open with the exception of one upper room in which were confined two white men.  These had glass windows. Owing to their absence in the other rooms the cold air drove in causing much suffering.  The beds are not more than two thirds the proper length, and have not been replenished with fresh straw for a long time. But one Blanket is furnished to each prisoner; and these are small and nearly worn out. They are all of them
