in the shooting of two colored men in the lower end of the County on the 23rd inst. Rice gave himself up to Dr J.G. Lumpkins J.P. and confessed to having shot the parties. He stated that the one who was most severely injured, he shot on purpose; the other was accidental.  The one least injured appeared and made the same statement. The Justice committed him in default of Bail in the sum of $500.00. The origin of the difficulty was not fully understood. The negro was so severely injured that it was considered doubtful at one time whether he would survive. I am not informed as to the prospect of his recovery.   

Criminals
There are now in confinement 

James Robinson col'd. Wife beating. In default of security for good behavior

Jackson Richards col'd. Assaulting a small white girl.  Sentenced at Augst term to one months confinement and $20 fine. Kept in custody for non-payment of said fine.
