seem far preferable-
In cases of litigation before the Courts, local
prejudices operate sadly against the freedman
while he is not denied the priviledge [[privilege]] of the law, 
he is unable is employ it in cases where he seeks a redress of grievances, and likewise, if proceeded against, he cannot employ its diciplin [[discipline]] in his defence- Thus, suspended as it were, between Heaven & Earth, he is at the mercy of wrath and influence in all his dealings with men, and of bitter and unrelenting prejudecis [[prejudices]] on the party jureis [[juries]] if brought before the Courts-.
Although it has been found impracticable to organize Temperance Societies among the freedmen, but very little intemperance exists; and they are in marked contrast with the white people in this respect-
