felt in the county. Nottoway Ca. is greatly in need of a School. The freedmen there though apparently able are indifferent about schools and do not seem to appreciate the benefits. They have many instructors in drunkenness and vice. but more in virtue and good morals. A School is much needed there for the benefit of all parties

The freedmen generally in this Div. use intoxicating liquors, and many to excess Previous to my coming here there had been little or no effort made to curtail its use or counteract its influence. And it is fair to presume that its use has increased in proportion to their means to purchase. A temperance society has been organized at Lunenburg C.H. which embraces the names of many of the best freedmen here and bids fair to be successful in inducing many to abstain from its use.

The freedmen are generally comfortably clothed but find it difficult to procure comfortable houses on account of their security and the lack of skill to build for themselves Their food generally is the same in kind
