States the Asst Comr directs, that previous efforts to sell Broom corn at Public Auction has not been very successful, and suggests that it be sent to Mr James Sullivan Balto Md. &c &c.
Endorsed

Fort Monroe Va Nov 14th 1865,

Respectfully returned to Col. O. Brown. Asst Com'r &c with remarks, that having had a very unprofitable experience in consigning produce for sale I had invited competition bids on the broom corn and had accepted one bid at $100. per ton if the conditions are complied with.
Possibly I can get off if you think it best, and will so indicate, but I think a bird in hand is worth two in the bush,
It was poorly gathered and some of it dark and mouldy but in this trade all goes in. It cannot be sent without chartering a vessel, and the the seed got off, and a machine,
In the contract I have made, He furnishes machines and a vessel, and takes it where, and as, it is, and the seed will more than compensate for the labor we furnish.

Richmond Va Nov 16th 1865
Respectfully returned. The Asst Commissioner thinks the arrangements made by Capt. Wilder better than the plan of sending to Baltimore,
