Requests to be informed relative to seizure of certain Houses &c in Norfolk Va belonging to John Southgate. to whom the property is leased and for what sum.

Respty referred to Mr C.E. Johnston Asst Supt &c with request that he forward the facts in the case of the seizure referred to by Col Brown of Southgate's property at the time it was turned over by the Bureau to him and forward through this office at an early day.

Respectfully returned. The property of John Southgate was seized as abandoned. by Major Morse Treasury Agent in Dec 1863. On the 1st of July 1865. this property was turned over to the Bureau by Major Hudson.
The houses Nos 3, 5, & 7. Freemason St were occupied by paying tenants. and No 8 Granby St was in possession of the Military and was used as quarters for the General. At the time of the restoration of the property to the owner. No 3 Freemason St was leased to L.W. Webb for six months from Sept 1865. at $12.50 per month. and No. 7 was leased to Porter Shuman for three months from Oct 1st 1865. at $15. per month. in both cases the rent being the same charged by the Treasury Agent. No. 5. Freemason St was assigned as quarters to the Teachers of A.M. association and leased for one year at the nominal rent of one dollar
