Wood Norfolk Co Va applies for restoration of Estate known as "Oakland" in Elizabeth City Co Va Also letter of Nov 16th 1865, Relative to "William Thornton (cold) paying rents" enclosed [] Wm Thornton (cold) page 29 [] Fort Monroe Va Jany 3d 1866 Respectfully returned to Col. O. Brown Asst Comr &c Richmond Va with the remark that Dr. Wood's papers were referred to me in Nov. and as I was informed he would be here soon I awaited to see him, with a view to make some fair arrangement if possible for the colored people on his place, there being over (30) thirty families living on it, very many of them unable at present to provide for themselves homes elsewhere. There are also a large number (I think over 40) Hospital buildings one large church, the Butler school House where 5 to 700 children attend and a very large cemetery on it. So I do not see how the place can be given up for this year. I have been informed that though the influence of Gen'l Howard & others the Sec of War has agreed, or assured the Rev Chaplain Marshall that about 10 acres will be reserved & set apart for the Seminary and a National Monument.
