Respectfully returned to Capt Stuart Barnes aqm &c with the information that I have investigated this case and find that the within named freeman was charged with, and found guilty of by the court of printing a fun at the person of Dr Patterson.
His sentence was twenty days in Jail on bread and water. half his head shaved, to be tied up by the thumbs and to perform hard labor for eight hours per day. for ten days. Lieut Bitner the asst supt then in charge here. added the punishment of carrying a barrel. Upon investigation I found that this officer swore at, and used abusive language to this freedman as stated within. several gentleman with whom I conversed state that the evidence of intention to shoot was not proven. This freedman had no witnesses though he requested that they be sent for.  (Sgd) Stuart Barnes Capt aqm &c
