320 of an Officer of the Freedmans Bureau 1 Sgt S. T. Barston Asst Adjutant in the absence of the Maj General U.S.A. [commanding[?]] War Dept. Bureau Ref F + AS Washington D.C. March 21 1766 Respty referred to Col O. [[?]] Asst Comm of Richmond Va who will please report the actual status of this property. There seems to be some misunderstanding as to who has the right to release it. By order of Maj Genl O.O. [[Howard?]] Com Sgt Wm. Fowler Asst Adjutant Bureau RF+AL Head for Asst Comm. [[?]] Richmond Va Marh 22 1766 Respty returned to Maj Genl O.O. Howard Com This mill was captured in Matthews County Va by troops under the command of Brig Genl Graham. It was taken in charge by Capt O. Brow A.G.M. + [[?]] of Negro Affairs and by him taken up on his Quarter Master [[?]]. It was transferred by Capt Brown as Quarter Master's Property to Capt A. S. Flagg AGM + [[?]] 1st Dist. Bureau of R.F.+A.L. State of Virginia. This property being [[?]] on Quarter Master's [[?]] it was not [[?]] proper by the Asst Com for the Bureau to release it. Sgt O Brown Col + Ast Com Official James A Bates Act Asst Adjutant Virginia Dept of [[J.]]R.W. 340 2nd Vol. 866 Chas & Wilson Bureau RF+AL Head [[?]] Asst Com St Va Richmond [[?]] 2nd/66 Respty returned to Bot Brig Genl E.W. Smith A. A. Genl Dept of Va. Private Walton is detailed as a [[grand?]] for the Bureau stables where government horses and property are kept he being the only [[grand?]] for the premises. I do not believe the charges made against Capts Bates and White. I most empathetically deny the charges made against myself. The writer of this was discharged from the employ of Capt White A.G.M. a few weeks since. He is now anxiously looked for by the detective police of this city to answer the charge of being connected with forging the name of E.A. Rollins Com Int'l Revenue.
