Sept. 13th 1865

Captain,
The undersigned, John N. Ashton a citizen resident in the city of Portsmouth, State of Virginia, aged fifty years respectfully represents that on the 18th of October 1862, he being unabled to obtain a livelyhood in the city of Portsmouth, left the same and went within the Confederate lines, with the sole purpose and design of obtaining business for his support, that he did not enlist or engage whilst there in the Military or Naval service of the "Confederate States", or any power at war with the United States, but remained in the pursuit of his mercantile business, and whilst he was enrolled among the "Reserved forces" under the "Conscript Law of the Confederate States" was never in active service. He further represents that on the     day of     his house and lot (which is all the Real Estate of which he is possessed) situated on the north side of High Street in the City of Portsmouth, State of Virginia, and bounded as follows on the west by the lands of Samuel M. Wilson, on the South by High Street, on the East by the lands formerly owned by V.C. Cooke, on the North by a
