I respectfully ask your attention to this paper.

At the outbreak of the war I was in possession of two tracts of land - the one, of two hundred & seventy acres, my own; the other, about six hundred acres, my Mother's. Upon this tract I have lived as her tenant, for about twenty five years- ever since the death of my father. Besides this property I had household & kitchen furniture, 8 cows & calves, 6 ewes & lambs, 4 oxen, 2 or 3 horses, 3 or 4 colts & about 50 hogs. this property I left in charge of Capt J Williams when I left my home at the commencement of the war. 

Last winter long before the surrender of Genl Lee, I applied to Genl Ord, Comdg: the right wing of the army of the Potomac for leave to return to my home, & later the oath of allegiance to the US Government. Receiving no reply, I left Petersburg, my
