To Genl. Howard Chief Bureau of R.F. & Abandoned Lands

The Petition of Absalom Bland, of the County of King & Queen in the State of Virginia, respectfully represents, that in the year 1857 he intermarried with one Mary Knewstep in the City of Norfolk, who then was and is still the owner of a house and lot on the East side of Cumberland street between Freemason and Charlotte streets in said city. That upon their intermarriage, she removed to his home in the County of King & Queen, and left the house and lot in charge of one Allen Howard, who continued to rent it out and account to your petitioner for the rents, until the same was taken charge of by the Government as abandoned property upon the occupation of the City of Norfolk by the United States Forces Your petitioner charges that in no sense of the term could it have been so regarded, if the facts of the case had been known. Your petitioner at the time was in no manner nor never has been in way connected with the late rebellion; he was at the commencement of it fifty six years of age peaceably residing up on his farm in the County of King & Queen, and after the commencement of it continued to live there, taking no part in it, not aiding or abetting it in any form. Your petitioner
