its seizure by the Agents of Treasury Department the property aforesaid, and now, was regularly rented to parties and mostly occupied by them. That Your Petitioner is born down by age and infirmities, being nearly Eighty Years of age and the greater part of his time confined to his Room.
That at the Earliest opportunity afforded to him on the 2nd day of June 1865 He appeared at the Provost Office at the Court House in the County of Sussex and took the oath proscribed in the President's Amnesty Proclamation or will appear by a copy of certificate herewith exhibited, which as Your Petitioner is informed restores him to all his Rights of property, even if they had been even lawfully suspended, which Your Petitioner utterly denies.
For he submits that, in as much as he was not or, for twenty Years, had been, a Resident of Norfolk. But that his property had been managed by an agent. That the seizure by the agents of the Treasury Department as "property abandoned by the Owners" was altogether irregular & inconsistent with the spirit of the Law.
