Hampton Elizabeth City Cy Va March 21 1866

To Genl Armstrong
Supt. Freedmen Refugees & A.L.

The petition of Thomas Bonnawell of said County respectfully represents.

"That he is the owner in fee of a certain lot of land in the town of Hampton in the county of Elizabeth City bounded and described as follows "bounded by Queen Street Home & Armistead" That up to Christmas 1865 he was in the undisturbed possession of same lot of land at that time he rented the same to a Freedman who has since refused to pay him rent on the ground that as the property in question is on the books of the Freedmens bureau  he is not liable to pay any rent. Your petitioner is willing that such Freedman should remain on the said lot of land upon payment of the rent agreed.
He files herewith the following evidence of title

1st Certificate from the clerk of the U.S. district court Norfolk that says property has not been the subject of any proceeding by way of libel for confiscation marked A.

2nd Certificate of clerk of the County Court of Elizabeth City County, showing ownership of property as appears of record in his office marked B.

3rd Certificate of having taken the Amnesty Oath required by the President's proclamation of 29 May 1865 marked C.
