Hampton Va Sept 8th 1865

To Genl O.O. Howard
Chief Bureau Freedmen Refugees &c
Washington DC

Sir
I have the honor respectfully to ask to be restored to the possession of my lots of land (2) the whole containing about 1 1/2 acres lying near the Coop Road in the County of Elizabeth City, Virginia. I took the oath of allegiance to the United States Government on the first day of August AD 1862. I am now fifty two years old and claim to be as loyal to the Government of the United States as any man. This small piece of ground is all I possess on Earth and I have a wife & five small children without a Home. I desire to get the said property in order that I may provide a shelter for them. Your early action on the previous will tend very much to relieve my most unfortunate condition.

Very Respectfully
Henry W. Buchanan

Hampton Va Sept. 9th 1865 I can freely and cordially endorse the above application of Mr. Henry Buchanan.
R.B. Wood
