Virginia York COunty, to wit:

I, Bolivar Shield, clerk of the County of York in the State aforsaid, do hereby certify and make known to all whom it may concern, that the tract of Land in York County Va below Yorktown,called "Newmans" containing one hundred and fifty acres (more or less) now occupied by the "Freedmen" was purchased many years ago by Stafford G. Cooke Esquire under a Decree of the Court of said County, and that the legal title is in said Cooke, as appears by the Records of the County. I also certify that a tract of Land now occupied by the "Freedmen" containing Four hundred & fifty acres, (more or less) lying near Yorktown in said County was before the late war the "Homestead" of the said Stafford G. Cooke, and I having been the custodian of the archives of the County for many years before the late war, know that the legal title to the said Land is in him the said Stafford G. Cooke.

Given under my hand and the Seal of the said County this 20th day of November A.D. 1865.
