To Capt Wilder. Superintendent of Freedmens Affairs &c.

Your Petitioner Virginia Cooper would most respectfully submit the following case.

That in the month of  1854 Jacob Ham Sr of the County of Elizabeth City died seized and possessed of a tract of land lying and situated in said County. 

That by the Will of the said Jacob Ham for which was duly admitted to record & probat in the County Court of Elizabeth City County: an authenticated copy of which will is filed with the petitioner, the said Jacob Ham Sr devised the said tract of land to his son Jacob Ham jr. That said Jacob Ham jr died over the age of twenty one years, & without issue on the day of   1865. That the said Jacob Ham jr by this will, which was duly admitted to probate in the County Court of Elizabeth City County, a copy of which is also filed with this petitioner, devised the aforesaid tract of land your petitioner Virginia Cooper for the term of her natural life,

And in consideration of the premises, Your Petitioner would most respectfully ask that the said tract of land may be turned over to her at the expiration of the present year. That by so doing, the rights or privileges of Freedmen will in no manner be interfered. with, as the property has been rented for the present year by a Mr Owens, & no Freedman has acquired in any way any possession to the said premises, unless as sub-tenants of the said Mr Owen. whose term expires at the end of the year - the period, when your Petitioner respectfully asks to be placed in possession.
