To Col: Brown, Commissioner of the Freedmen's &c, Bureau of Virginia.
The undersigned Wm. H. Curtis most respectfully represents that, he has taken the oath prescribed by President Johnson's proclamation, and is a true and loyal Citizen of the United States, and submits the following petition.  That he is the owner in fee of a tract of land, called "Waterview," situate on Warwick river, three miles from its mouth, in Warwick County Virginia, and containing about 500 acres, as will fully appear by the certificate of the clerk of said county herewith filed, marked A.
The line of defences that protected York Town, in the spring of, 1862, ran through the said farm of your petitioner, and in consequence of active military operations, he was then forced to leave said farm and returned to take possession of it, in May last, as soon as circumstances would allow, but was unable to do so, it being then, and is now, in the possession of some freedmen - But said farm has not been confiscated, as is shown by the certificate of the clerk of the United States Court at Norfolk, also filed herewith as a part of this petition, marked B.  Your petitioner further shows, and charges
