Capt Johnson
Supt Freedmen & Abandoned Lands
Sir: I respectfully submit the following facts in connection with my property. I am a widow, 65 years of age. My husband has been dead 11 years When Portsmouth was evacuated by the Confederate troops I was living in Duplin County, North Carolina with my relatives there. At that time my property was rented out It was not my intention to abandon my property. It was almost impossible for a person of my age to get through the lines in account of the distance & the means of traveling, but I finally succeeded and returned to Portsmouth on 2d day of March 1865 and found that my tenant had been removed and other persons occupied the property being rented to them by the Treasury Agent. On that day I took an oath as prescribed by President Lincoln, I have since taken the oath as prescribed by President Johnson, Certificate of which is enclosed. My property has not been libeled for confiscation as is shown by enclosed Certificate of the Clerk of the Court of the City of Plymouth showing that it is my property & that my taxable property does not amount to $20000, I most earnestly request that my property be restored to me, so that I can control it & receive the rents therefore.
Very Respectfully Susannah Ghio
