Your petitioner at the time of leaving Norfolk was the possessor & owner of the Steam Engine Saw Mill, Planeing Machine Marine Railway &c No 66 W. Water St commonly known as Williamsons Wharf. Bounded on the East by the property of Wm. E- Taylor & on the west by that of Alexr Bell that his Brother was left incharge of said work & so remained, untill [[until]] on or about the 10th of May 1862, when the City was taken possessein [[possession]] of, by the U. S. forces, at the same time, the machinery &c of your petitioner, was taken for the uses of the Government, and has been used under the direction of the Quarter Masters Dept and so held & used up to this time. Your petitioner would resptfully [[respectfully]] represent that as thier [[there]] is at this time little use by the Govt for, said saw mill as above named.

Your petitioner having subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance under the Amnesty Proclamation of President Lincoln, on the 8th of April of this year, as also to the same of President Johnson would respectfully petition that the said Steam Engine Saw Mill &c as before named be returned to him that he may be allowed with said machinery to pursue his usual vocation and thus provide for a dependant [[dependent]] family who have been forced from thier [[their]] home by which act thier all of comfort was lost and there is no hope for thier support save through his petition who today is entirely without means
