The Petition of Emily Graves of the City of Portsmouth in the State of Virginia respectfully represents, that she is a widowed woman, the widow of Robert A. Graves late of Portsmouth, and that she with her two daughters Mary and Margaret and son Robert a boy Seventeen years old, the children of said Robert A. Graves, are the owners of two houses and lots situated at the North Eastern intersection of Washington and County streets in the [[strikethrough]] county [[/strikethrough]] City of Portsmouth.

That upon the occupation of the said City of Portsmouth by the United States Forces, your petitioner finding it difficult to live, and believing that she could improve the pecuniary condition of herself and children she removed with them to the City of Richmond about the 20th October 1862, where she remained till April 1865. That upon returning she found that the said houses and lots had been taken possession of by the Gov't as abandoned property, and rented
