Petersburg 13th October 1865.
Capt. Forest Barnes

Having Received information; that a small portion, of my farm; in Prince George County cultivated this year by the Government in Corn & Beans; and Fort Davis; which they had now, in their possession. Have been Reported as Abandoned I beg leave to state; that my Houses, twelve in number; were situated immediately between the lines of the two armies and were all burned on the 18th June 1864. I left and remained away in, another part of the state until after the fall of Petersburg I Returned saw Gen McMillan who gave me permission; to settle in Fort Davis; which I did with some hands, and Overseer. I was taken sick and went to the Springs; on my Return in a few weeks I found Overseer, and hands, all gone and the Fort, in possession of the Government. I called to see the Gen., who informed me that there was no other place, suitable to place the hands; and stated I should have possession; as soon as the crop was taken off I then employed other hands, and built some cabins where my houses had stood; and settled again.
