Sir I have the honor to report the following statement of facts in answer to the application made by Mrs. Martha Haynes to wit. I went to the Mulberry Island Warwick Co. Va. as near as I recollect in Jan 1864, I found the farm called Sweet Spring abandoned by the white people and reoccupied by Jenny Marrow & other colored people (formerly owned by Mrs Haynes) I made a bargain with them for the rent of said place for the year 1864 for which they paid the Govt the share of crop agreed. Some time in the summer of 1864 (the month I do not recollect) but it was several weeks after May Gen Butler landed his army at Bermuda Hundred Mrs Haynes came home from Bermuda Hundred & went directly to her place as she calls it and ordered the colored people to leave the house as she was coming into it at once. the colored people objected and before they could send or come to give me notice of what was to take place Mrs Haynes
