Norfolk Va 21st Aug. 1865

To Charles E. Johnson [[Johnston]] Esq.
Supt. Freedmans Bureau

The undersigned hereby makes application for the possession of the premises now occupied by her, situated near the intersection of Duke and Washington Street and known as the homestead of John Hipkins deceased, and in that behalf submits the following Statement of facts to wit:

That the title to said property was in John Hipkins, and is now in his heirs, he having died intestate. That the said John Hipkins was the husband of this applicant, and was an old resident of Norfolk; that her said husband left Norfolk solely on account of ill health, on the 27th day of April 1861 and went to Granville Co N.C, and failed to recover, and died on the 7th day of Dec. 1864.

This applicant followed her said husband, with his family to Granville N.C. leaving Norfolk on the 2nd day of May 1861, & remained with her husband until his death; that her said husband has never been interested in or identified with the so called Confederate Government and has performed no act, transacted no business of
