                                                            Sept 18th 1865

Sir

I have understood that Sarah N. Pierce is making application for the restoration of certain property in the city of Portsmouth VA formerly belonging to Joseph Pierce (deceased), and which was taken possession of by the W.S. Govt.

In the first place she (Mrs. Pierce) has only a claim for one third of the said property as her dower, as the widow of the said Pierce, there being a child by a former wife who is the legal heir.  

Joseph Pierce was the naval instructor for the Rebel Government and an uncompromising Rebel himself and his widow who now makes applications for the restoration of said property is noted for her aversion to the U.S. Govt. and brags of his
