Chief Bureau Freedman as Abandoned Lands in Dept Virginia.
The Petition of Jane Lewelling, of the City of Norfolk, respectfully represents, that she is the widow of William H. Lewelling, who died in the City of Norfolk in the year 1856, leaving five children, four of which now survive, viz, Josephine, the wife of William Calwell, Calvert aged fourteen years, Ella aged eleven years, and James age nine years; the three last altogether dependent upon your petitioner for a support; and your petitioner having no resources save those of her own labor. That on the 30th July 1864, John R. Baldry, the half brother of the said William H. Lewelling and the half uncle of the children of your petitioner, was killed at the explosion of the Mine before Petersburg; that the said John R. Baldry was an unmarried man, had never been married, and left no other relatives or heirs at law entitled to his property but the children of your petitioner. That at the time of his death the said John R. Baldry was the owner of a lot of land and a Wood House in the City of Norfolk at the North West intersection of Bute & Cumberland Streets, and which then and now is in the possesion of the United States as abandoned
