I. Joseph C. Peirce being duly sworn, maketh oath that I am the grandson of Mrs. Margaret Primer; that in February 1862 I was suffering from fistula in arms; [[[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] that in order to put myself under a skill full surgeon I went to Raleigh North Carolina; and that my Grand Mother for the purpose of attending to me, while confined by the disease, did leave her residence in Portsmouth Va and go to the city of Raleigh N. Ca. on or about the last of February or the first of March 1862; that I never heard Mrs. Primer express any intention of abandoning her residence the town of Portsmouth; and that in the May following after I had recovered my health, she expressed an intention of returning to her home, but was prevented from so doing by the capture of the city of Portsmouth by the U.S. forces, her advanced age preventing her from "running the Blockade." as it was called or even going through by flag of truce without a  male escort, which she could not obtain
