In behalf of my sister, Mary V. Richardson, a minor, & myself, I respectfully make application for the possession of the property belonging to the estate of John Richardson, dec'd, of whom we are the sole surviving heirs.  The said property consists of a house and lot situated on Court Street and a house & lot on Glasgow street both in the city of Portsmouth Virginia.

In making this application it is respectfully but earnestly represented that the above named property should not be considered as abandoned property for the following reasons.  My mother on her dying bed exacted (my father joining her) a promise from Miss F. H. Moore, a maiden lady, that she would take charge of her children, supervise their education and raising.  This lady, our Aunt did promise and fulfilled it.  At the outbreak of this Rebellion I was & had been for a number of years a member of a volunteer company belonging
