To Charles E. Johnston
Asst Supt Bureau of
Refugees Freemen & A.L.

Sir,
The object of this petition is to attain possession of the House and Lot No. 10 Fen Church Street now in the possession of Mr. Stanford an officer in the Navy of the United States, as tenant. This house and lot was taken possession of by the Government of the United States sometime in the month of December last year (1864).
The tenant paid rent for it to Mrs Virginia Salusbury the widow and administratrix of John S. Salusbury deceased to the first of December 1864 - And she was informed during the month of December that the Government had notified the tenant to pay her no more rent.
This is all which is known to your petitioner of the passage of the property into the hands of the government - except that on the 9th day of March A D 1865, Mr. John Hawshurst [[Hawkhurst]] received of Mrs. Virginia Salusbury the whole amount of taxes due to the Government and gave his receipt for the same as Commissioner.
This application is made in behalf of Mr. Augustus Salusbury, a minor, and orphan of John S. Salusbury deceased who enlisted in the Southern Army during the year 1862 being at that time only fifteen (15) years old without the consent of his mother. He served in said Army for about six months and was then discharged. He has now taken the Oath of Allegiance and has made submission to the Government of the United States.,
