Deep Creek August 19th 1865

Mr T. P. Jackson
Ass't Sup't
Freedmans Bureau

Sir
I have the honor respectfully to ask for the release of my lands from the Freedmans Bureau as I have taken all of the prescribed oaths required by Ex President Lincoln and President Johnson, the former I took at Norfolk on the First of May 1865 the latter at Norfolk on the 6th of June 1865

I have never served actively as a soldier in the Confederate Army although, as an private, I was detailed in the Commissary Department. My lands are my sole dependence and I hope it my be within your power to release them.

I am Sir Your
Obedient Servant
